The project is led by 3 lead clubs, Rotary clubs of Colombo Metropolitan, Colombo Fort and Colombo West. All three clubs have engaged in fundraising and service projects that benefited children born to congenital heart disease for many years and now stands as an integral stakeholder of Lady Ridgeway Hospital.
Colombo Metropolitan focuses on life changing heart surgeries for children born to CHD, in particular ASD. These children are taken from the LRH waiting list and fast tracked via private hospitals in Colombo. Colombo Metropolitan has in the past collaborated with Gift of Life Sri Lanka and Gift of Life International, Linde Foundation and a number of generous private donors. 154 children to date has been saved, Colombo Metropolitan aims to save 50 children each year. Overall value of US$350,000 to date.
The Rotary Club of Colombo Fort has taken a leading role in the R4LH project, notably establishing Sri Lanka’s first Human Heart Valve Bank in 2017 through a Global Grant (GG1526144) with the Rotary Foundation. This tissue bank, developed in collaboration with 18 Rotary International Districts and managed by the Ministry of Health and Lady Ridgeway Hospital, has provided vital support for pediatric cardiac surgery by ensuring a steady supply of homograft (donor heart valves). Since 2020, the facility has successfully supported over 70 surgeries. This project, supported by local and international donors, highlights Rotary’s ability to mobilize resources for critical healthcare infrastructure, improving surgical outcomes and the long-term health prospects of children in need.
Colombo West focuses on life changing surgeries for children born to CHD in particular with focus on more complex surgeries. Colombo West has collaborated with outher Rotary Clubs in India to be able to send children to Amritha Hospital for life changing surgery. Also included in the global grant is the facility to train doctors and nurses in India. The overall grant is valued at US$300000 and so far 100 children have been saved.
